Biog “Has presence and a superb voice.” “Charl het ‘n stewige baritonstem verpak in ‘n sjarmante kunstenaar”Winning critical acclaim, and enthusiastic support, despite being born in Bloemfontein, Charl started his singing career at an early age, winning several awards at eisteddfods (one of them for being the best 12 year old singer with the least hair). He started singing tuition with Werner Nel in his matric year, and later studied at the Musikhochschule in Munich, Germany under the world-renowned singing teacher, Prof. Hanno Blaschke. He performed in various oratorios and concerts, made his operatic debut at the tender age of 21, and subsequently sang leading roles as lyric baritone in operas such as The Barber of Seville (Figaro), for PACOFS, Carmen (Morales) for PACT, The Marriage of Figaro (The Count) and Don Giovanni (The Don), both at Roodepoort Civic Theatre. “Charl van Heyningen se Truk-debuut is vlekloos, met ‘n gemaklike verhoogteenwoordigheid en uitstekende aanvoeling vir die Franse styl” “Charl van Heyningen sings excellently as the Don and gives a fresh and youthful portrayal of a saturnine but insouciant philanderer” “Charl van Heyningen brings a sharply defined reading to Count Almaviva, with a beautifully rich, robust and heroic vocal quality”He made his theatrical debut in A Touch of Webber, a Taste of Rice in 1992, and became hooked at once, a sort of baritone barbel. “ Van Heyningen in his first musical theatre performance brings the house down!” ‘Van Heyningen has stage presence, charisma and a voice, operatic in its impact”He recorded his first CD, MASKERS, in 1998, and received an FNB SAMA nomination for Best Male Artist. In between these activities he has obtained a law degree, (which is no help at all in the lawless world of music), became an actor (Wolwedans in die Skemer, Die Losprys, etc.) and is a very busy entertainment consultant, commercial voice artist, presenter of corporate training videos and publicist. He is married to Rachel and they have 3 children – Cara, Emma and Charl Junior, and when his children allow him time, he jogs, goes to gym, does Powerplate and yoga. They live in Somerset West, Cape. Early in 2000, along with Rory Rootenberg, Karen Meiring and Bondina Osterhoff, he launched WHO STOLE THE ORCHESTRA?, an harmonious and hilarious, semi-classical a capella show, also directed by Ian von Memerty. In May 2000, he again joined forces with Ian and PER AMORA, his first solo cabaret, has done exceptionally well since its first performance at the Observatory Theatre in Bloemfontein. A solo CD, LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL / LA VITA E BELLA , was released in June 2001, and was nominated for 2 Geraas Music Awards. Songs from the album were often seen on TV, and were playlisted on various radio stations. LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL – THE SHOW, played to packed houses nationwide, and was nominated for an FNB Vita award. Hitting the stages in September 2002 was “MOVIES GREATEST MUSIC – from Casablanca to Moulin Rouge”, a stunning show consisting of some of the greatest movie songs ever. His co-stars were Lisa Melman and Russel Savadier / AJ van der Merwe, with Fiona Ramsay as director. Charl's project for 2004, sponsored by Mr. Video and Sunair, was "HOOKED ON SWING!" , a finger-clicking, foot-stomping rollercoaster of a show with jazz newcomer Beverly Rinkwest. This show features some of the greatest songs from the Swing Era, as made famous by Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole and lately Robbie Williams and Michael Buble. HOOKED ON SWING is still sought after on the corporate circuit. In 2005, with financial support by Rand Merchant Bank, he collaborated with Jannie Moolman, Rory Rootenberg, Fikile Mvinjelwa, a 5-piece band, AJ van der Merwe and Fiona Coyne in VIBRAVO!, a wonderful stage show brimming with operatic and contemporary favourites, playing to capacity houses everywhere it was performed. Vibravo is still very much in demand, with great singers such as Louis Loock, Given Mabena and Theo Magongoma joining the cast from time to time. Although Charl still enjoys performing and does so at each opportunity, the biz side of showbiz has become part and parcel of his life. He thrives on the continuous challenges it brings forth. “Van Heyningen slaag daarin om die gehoor uit die staanspoor met sy sjarme te betower in ‘n goed saamgestelde, gebalanseerde en vermaaklike vertoning” | ||||||||||||
